Herbst Bite Jumping Appliance

Girl smilingThe Herbst “bite jumping” appliance is used to enhance the growth of the lower jaw in a forward direction. It can also be designed to apply pressure to the upper jaw in a backwards direction. This appliance helps to correct the front-to-back relationship of the upper and lower jaws.

A rod and tube that works like a shock absorber actually connects the upper and lower jaws. This really does not interfere with opening and closing the mouth or with eating. Cutting food into small bites will help with chewing for the first few days. Side-to-side movement is somewhat restricted and should be avoided to prevent breakage. Opening too wide will allow the appliance to come apart. If this happens, open wide and guide the appliance back together again upon closing.

Some tenderness to the teeth and to some of the muscles in your cheeks is perfectly normal and should last only three to seven days. If it persists, you should call the office. Tylenol (or whatever you commonly use) should give some relief.

The inside of the cheeks may be irritated by the appliance until these areas have built up calluses. It is best to sleep on your back to avoid pressure and irritation to the cheeks. After the first few days pass, the appliance becomes very comfortable to wear.

Normally, the Herbst “bite jumping” appliance is used for approximately 6-12 months. Please call the office if you have any questions.
