Boy with bracesThe purpose of separators is to create space between the teeth, which will allow orthodontic “bands” to fit over the teeth at appliance placement time. The separators themselves are small doughnut-shaped elastic modules or metal springs.

When the separators are placed between the teeth, they will feel like something is lodged between the teeth. The teeth will become somewhat tender. This is normal and should be expected. The discomfort will disappear in a few days. To relieve any soreness, rinse with warm salt water. An over-the-counter analgesic may also be taken, if necessary.

Please remember:

  • Do not eat anything that will pull the separators out of place. (Gum, caramels, taffy, etc.)
  • A soft diet is recommended for a few days.
  • Continue to brush thoroughly every day, taking care not to brush the separators out of place.
  • Do not floss in the areas where separators have been placed.
  • If you lose any separators, please call the office unless it is a day or two before your next appointment. If the separators are lost and not replaced, we cannot proceed with the next appointment. It is up to you to check them daily.

Please call us if there are any questions.
